New Generic EMC Standards are now available

All 4 of the existing generic EMC standards within the BS EN 5008 series have now been replaced with the new BS EN61000-6 series.....but manufacturers needn’t panic as they have until July 2004 to address the new requirements.

The issue of the new standards means that where manufacturers have previously self-certified to the old standards they now have a little over 2 years to retest their products to the new standards in order to continue to sell them in EU. Products all ready sold or in service will not have to be retested. This may also apply to manufacturers who have used the TCF route to compliance.

The differences between the new and old standards are as follows:

BS EN61000-6-1: 2001 which replaces BS EN50082-1: 1997, no significant changes to test methods and levels.

BS EN61000-6-2: 2001 which replaces BS EN61000-6-2: 1999, no significant changes to test methods and levels.

BS EN61000-6-3: 2001 which replaces BS EN50081-1: 1992, now call for emission measurements to be performed on Signal, Control and DC I/O cables. References to EN60555-2 & 3 replaced by IEC61000-3-2 & 3.

BS EN61000-6-4: 2001 which replaces BS EN50081-2: 1994, no significant changes to test methods and levels.

It is recommended that where manufacturers have used the old standards that their products are assessed against the new standards even where there are no significant changes between the two.
